WHAT IS AMERICORPS?
AmeriCorps was founded in 1994 and is often referred to as a domestic Peace Corps. Habitat partners with the Corporation for National and Community Service to place AmeriCorps members at local Habitat affiliates and partner organizations. AmeriCorps members interact with the community, build homes, lead volunteers, increase capacity and help improve productivity. AmeriCorps members start their service in late August or early September and serve full-time (40 hours per week) for 10 1/2 months. Each member must serve at least 1,700 hours. BENEFITS FOR AMERICORPS MEMBERS
AmeriCorps members contribute a year of service and in return receive a modest living stipend, housing, health insurance, an education award, job training, and personal and professional growth opportunities. Members will leave their year of service not only with new transferable skills, but also with a sense of community that comes with no other employment opportunity.
AmeriCorps National members receive living allowance of $12,630 for the program term (before taxes). AmeriCorps VISTA members will receive a living allowance of $14,136. Members will also be provided housing for their service term.
AmeriCorps members also receive an educational award of $5,815 (before taxes) granted upon completion of the AmeriCorps term. A partial educational award will not be issued if a member leaves his/her term of service early. The award can be used to pay off present educational loans or can be used to pay for future schooling.
