Our Program

Habitat’s Vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Mission Statement: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity of Broward brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Habitat Broward offers a “hand up” not a “hand out” to low to very low-income families who are unable to qualify for conventional financing but are willing to work hard to improve their family’s lives.

Key initiatives:

  • Empower partner families through education, resources and support to successfully achieve their personal, academic and  professional goals
  • Teach the youth of future homeowner families the skills and attitudes needed to make better life choices and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty
  • Increase awareness and educate the community regarding issues related to the affordable housing crisis and what they can do to help
  • Pursue green building certification for Habitat Broward homes in order to make our design more sustainable and eco-friendly
  • Revitalize and strengthen the community by building affordable homes throughout Broward County.

Faith Principles

The tithe – Habitat continues the cycle of sharing in accordance with the Old Testament model of tithing. Each Habitat affiliate gives a tithe on the money raised locally to help build homes in severely impoverished countries. Global missions trips for Apostle Build Churches are available.

Putting faith into action – Habitat provides a tangible opportunity for people to put their faith and love into action. We bring diverse groups of people together to make affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone.

Sharing resources to help others – By sharing resources with those in need, Habitat volunteers and supporters have made decent, affordable housing a reality for more than 300,000 families worldwide. Partner families purchase their homes interest-free, and mortgage income is “paid forward” to help build other Habitat homes.

The theology of the hammer – Through Habitat, people of all beliefs and from all walks of life can come together, pick up a hammer, and help others build a better life.

Non-proselytizing policy

Habitat for Humanity of Broward will not proselytize. Nor will HFHB work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with HFHB. This means that HFHB will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

Sustainable Business Model

Employment Opportunities

Habitat for Humanity of Broward not only creates homes for our community, but also serves as a home and community to our staff members. We take pride in creating a healthy work culture and would love to have you be a part of it!

About Us

Habitat for Humanity of Broward is committed to improving the lives of hard-working families by helping them build and buy their own simple, decent homes. Habitat offers families a hand up, not a handout. Every partner family devotes at least 300 hours per adult of sweat equity to help build their home or a neighbor’s home and secures a 0 percent interest mortgage provided by Habitat. Habitat supports partner families with training in budgeting, homebuyer education, and home and landscape maintenance training. To date, Habitat Broward has built 507 homes locally.

Habitat for Humanity of Broward is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, or disability.

Team Build Days

Take Team-Building to a Whole New Level!

Habitat for Humanity of Broward’s Corporate Team Building program is an employee engagement opportunity with 35 years of experience building stronger teams, while providing employees with a unique way to give back to their community. Corporate Team Builds can engage employees and encourage stronger relationships, all while learning new skills.

Habitat Broward makes a tangible difference in our community, while also extending valuable benefits to businesses and organizations: employee volunteer opportunities, alignment with Habitat for Humanity’s highly-prized brand, and strategic marketing exposure throughout the Broward community.

Habitat provides all the tools, building materials, and training for your Team Build; no construction experience is needed. Teams contribute a tax-deductible donation in conjunction with their build day.

Habitat Broward offers three options for Corporate Team Builds:

  1. Team Build for 10-15 volunteers – $1,500
  2. Team Build for 15-20 volunteers – $2,500
  3. Team Build for 20-25 volunteers – $5,000

Why is there a financial donation?

Teams contribute a tax-deductible donation to cover the cost of materials and supervision for your builds. This support also allows us to continue to provide affordable housing opportunities for families with limited incomes and establish safe neighborhoods. With such high housing and land costs in the Broward area, Corporate Team Building donations are crucial in helping us to serve more families.

To request a Corporate Team Build opportunity, please complete and submit the HFHB Corporate Group Application Form and send it via email to gina@habitatbroward.org or via fax to 954-396-3050

Sponsor a Home

Home Sponsorship

Whether a corporation, foundation, faith-based organization, or an individual, home sponsors are critical partners in helping Habitat Broward make affordable homeownership a reality for families in need!

In addition to covering construction costs, home sponsors are invited to volunteer alongside our hardworking partner families, participate in groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, and take advantage of media and publicity opportunities.

Sponsors can participate at various financial levels, from a full home to partial or co-sponsorship. Habitat Broward welcomes the opportunity to custom design a sponsorship package to best meet your needs.

Gift Opportunities

Your tax-deductible contribution to Habitat for Humanity is an investment in children, families, our town and our future. Research shows clearly that homeownership improves health, increases children’s educational achievement, reduces reliance on public assistance and strengthens civic engagement. We hope you will consider joining our leadership giving family by becoming a Habitat Homebuilder. Your meaningful contribution will make a profound difference in our community.

GENTRI Show – Benefiting Habitat for Humanity

GENTRI, which is short for “The Gentlemen Trio” was established in June 2014 and is comprised of three dynamic tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliot and Bradley Quinn. Pioneering a signature sound they call “Cinematic Pop,” the music of GENTRI is transfused with lush, epic orchestrations and rich, dynamic three-part harmonies all composed by the group’s producer Stephen Nelson.

Sporting Clay Tournament

Habitat Broward is celebrating over 30 years of building homes in Broward County! With the faithful support of home sponsors, volunteers and our Habitat staff, more than 376 families are in safe, affordable homes. It is our goal to raise enough money — $70,000 — from this tournament to be able to build a new home for another hard-working family!

Women Build

Habitat Broward’s annual Women Build program brings together women from all walks of life and challenges them to make a positive impact on the future of Broward County by providing safe, healthy housing for hard-working families. Since 2002, thousands of women in Broward have shared their time, talents and resources to build 61 Women Build homes, making Habitat Broward’s program one of the largest and most successful in the United States. Collegiate Challenge

Every year during the month of March, hundreds of college students from across the country travel to Fort Lauderdale to help Habitat Broward build simple, decent, affordable homes for hard-working families.  The volunteers are participants of Habitat for Humanity International’s Collegiate Challenge, which is one of the country’s largest alternative spring break programs and offers the opportunity for students to gain new skills, make new friends, and make a meaningful impact on the community.

In March 2019, Habitat Broward will welcome over 100 students for the 2019 Collegiate Challenge from the University of Mary Washington, Western Michigan University, Fitchburg State University, University of Pittsburgh, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Manchester University.

For more information on Collegiate Challenge, or to sign up for 2020, contact Gina Caballero, Director of Volunteer Engagement, at (954) 649-6306 or gina@habitatbroward.org.

Hosting Your Own Event?
Habitat Broward welcomes the opportunity to partner with outside organizations in order to generate support and awareness for our mission.  Funds raised through special events such as golf tournaments, art auctions, grand openings, promotions and more help us to fulfill our mission of building safe, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need throughout our community.

If you would like to host an event or promotion to benefit Habitat Broward, please contact Brian Jones at (954) 396-3030 x228, or brian@habitatbroward.org.

Is there a volunteer orientation?

Yes! All volunteers must complete the online registration and orientation and bring a signed waiver to site the first time they volunteer.

TOP

What is the age requirement to volunteer on the jobsite?

Everyone on the jobsite must be at least 16 years of age. Those under the age of 18 must keep their feet on the ground at all times (no roofs or ladders) and must have their waiver signed by a parent/guardian.

TOP

What should I bring with me to volunteer?

All necessary tools will be provided on the job site. We do not provide gloves, so please bring your own if you require them. Water and Gatorade are provided on site, but we encourage you to help us stay “green” and conserve cups by bringing a reusable water bottle.

TOP

What should I wear?

Whether the task is painting, landscaping or roofing, your clothes and shoes WILL get dirty, so please dress accordingly. You MUST wear closed-toe shoes. Sunscreen and a hat are also recommended.

TOP

What time do I need to arrive on the jobsite, and how long will we work?

Plan to arrive no later than 7:45 a.m. to sign in and attend the morning circle, which begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. Attendance at the morning circle is required in order to volunteer for the day. We generally work until 12:30.

TOP

What if I can only work in the afternoon?

Attendance is required at the 8:00 a.m. morning circle, where we assign and explain the tasks for the day. If you are not able to arrive at that time, you are welcome to find a day that better fits your schedule.

TOP

Are volunteers provided lunch?

No. It is recommended that you eat breakfast beforehand. We provide snacks during the 10am Snack break.

TOP

Can I fulfill my community service hours with Habitat (court or school assigned)?

Yes! Please make sure you bring your form and have the construction site supervisor or Re-Store manager to sign it at the end of the day.

TOP

Do I need to have prior construction experience?

No! Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. We have skilled staff and volunteer leaders on site to explain and supervise each task. If you are not comfortable with a task, you can simply ask to do something else.

TOP

What should I do if it is raining?

If you are scheduled to volunteer, please report to the job site regardless of weather conditions. South Florida weather typically changes quickly, but we will release you from the jobsite if the weather gets too extreme for work.  In the case of Hurricanes and Tropical Storms, the jobsite WILL be closed.  Please follow all government restrictions and regulations.

TOP

If I am giving my time, do I need to make a financial donation as well?

Habitat Broward does not require individual volunteers to make a financial contribution to our construction program. No individual will be turned away because they chose not to make a financial contribution. However, we will graciously accept any donations you are willing to make.

Volunteer

Volunteers play an essential role in our mission, whether it’s on a construction site, at the Habitat ReStore, in our office, serving on a committee, or at one of our events.
